A popular video streaming platform for video games called Twitch to ditch Flash for HTML5, which is a more prominent and better standard than Flash. Earlier, web developers used to use Flash a lot and almost every website we visited would incorporate Flash into its videos and menus.
Twitch writes on its blog:
“Today’s redesign moves half of the video player – specifically the controls – from Flash to HTML5 and Javascript. The video itself is still in Flash underneath the controls. However, this is an important step to releasing the much-anticipated full HTML5 player.”
“You’ll begin to see the new player on channel pages first. As previously mentioned, this is a gradual roll out. If you are not part of our initial pool of users, please be patient as we release the redesigned player at a steady pace.”
The move by Twitch to ditch Flash for HTML5 is similar to that of Google’s YouTube. In 2010, YouTube first tested HTML5 video and then in 2014 it made HTML5 video the default in most cases. Earlier this year, YouTube is planning to completely ditch Flash. Probably it won’t take Twitch five years to completely ditch Flash.
Twitch to ditch Flash for HTML5 and their first update will only affect the players’ controls, while the actual video will still be based on Flash. Twitch said that more HTML5 updates will be coming in the future and also said “This is an important step to release the much-anticipated full HTML5 player.”
Twitch to ditch Flash for HTML5, we think that it is a smart move by them because earlier this month Mozilla blocked all Flash by default in Firefox. Also, Facebook’s newly appointed security chief publicly called for Adobe to kill off Flash. It may be soon that Flash will be eliminated forever from the web.
