Opera has launched free and unlimited VPN service to iOS on Monday, just a few weeks after introducing the same for its browser.

Officially called Opera VPN, the app allows users to browse securely and view content that may otherwise be restricted, due to their location or other restrictions.

Just like other VPNs, Opera’s app also allows the user to mask his true location by “borrowing” an IP address from another area.

If you’re an Android user in dire need of a free VPN, then don’t feel left out as it is also coming soon.

Why is Opera VPN service to iOS unusual?

You can pick your virtual location from 5 different regions — the United States, Germany, Canada, Singapore and the Netherlands. Though the company has plans to add more locations in a later update.

The app also blocks ad-tracking cookies and has a built-in ad-blocker.

Opera is not the first company to offer a VPN service for iOS device, however, this offering is unusual because it’s totally FREE.

As there are no in-app purchases, subscriptions or even ads (at least, not yet).

But the company has plans..

Chris Houston, president of Opera’s VPN division, explains rather bluntly in a blog post that a VPN service costs money to operate, and the company will likely introduce advertising into the application in the future.

Well, this is acceptable as the companies get paid by advertisers based on their users’ engagement with their ads.

What will you not like about this free VPN service?

Companies also make money by collecting anonymous data about how people use their mobile device. And make this information available to third parties who are interested in better understanding the mobile ecosystem and how it’s evolving.

Though the data collected by the app is anonymized and won’t track individuals’ browsing habits, but this may put off some privacy-conscious users.

In that case, you have to stick to the company’s premium VPN service.

Last but not the least, if a company is providing a product for free then YOU are the product (always keep that in mind).
