Yesterday, Intel and Micron announced a new memory technology called 3D XPoint, which has the potential to revolutionize any device, service or application that can be benefited from faster access to large amounts of data.

3D XPoint technology is partway between RAM and NAND Flash and will be fundamentally and dramatically better than any other memory technology we have seen in decades.

3D XPoint, the new memory technology developed by Intel and Micron is 1,000 times faster than the NAND flash memory technology, which is used in today’s consumer electronics and SSDs (Solid State Drives) in both reading and writing data.

Mark Adams, President of Micron said:

“One of the most significant hurdles in modern computing is the time it takes the processor to reach data on long-term storage. This new class of non-volatile memory is a revolutionary technology that allows for quick access to enormous data sets and enables entirely new applications.”

According to Intel and Micron, 3D XPoint might bring various advancements, which are as follows:

1. Better speech recognition for talking to the phone.
2. The computers controlled by hand gestures.
3. Better face recognition for biometric security.
4. Seamless transitions between scenes in video games.
5. Real-time gene sequencing and financial fraud detection.
6. The non-volatile nature of the 3D XPoint technology makes it a great choice for a variety of low latency storage applications.

Intel and Micron refused to tell the details regarding the materials they have used in producing 3D XPoint because ‘those details are proprietary,’ said the company officials. They also not revealed the price of the initial chips, either.

However, they said that the production of the new chips will be started this year at a jointly owned factory in Utah. Intel and Micron are also planning to release sample units to selected hardware manufacturers later this year.
