Google Owned Nest Labs Unveiled Latest Home Security Camera “Nest Cam”

Nest Labs, the home automation company acquired by Google last year for $3.2 billion, has unveiled its latest Internet-connected home security camera called Nest Cam, for smart homes along with a cloud based subscription service (Nest Aware) that will let you save 10 to 30 days of continuous video footage captured from the device.

Nest Cam is designed with the features of Dropcam, the start-up acquired for $555 million by Nest labs in 2014. The latest security camera by Nest Labs is having the ability to shoot video in 1080p high-definition with a wide angle glass lens. The camera provides 8X digital zoom, motion sensors and also leverages eight infrared LEDs to capture clear footages at night.

The videos captured can be directly uploaded to the Nest Aware cloud storage and live feed can be streamed to a computer or a Smartphone. This will allow Nest Cam to provide more accurate alerts to its users when it detects any movement in the house and can identify areas where common false alarms occur, like shadows moving across ceilings.

The Nest Cam is priced at $200 and would be available at retailers like Amazon, Best Buy and Target, from next week. The Nest Aware cloud service would cost around $10 a month for 10 days of continuous video storage and a second camera can be added to the subscription for $5 a month. It would cost around $30 a month to store 30 days of continuous video from one camera.

Maxime Veron, Head of hardware product marketing at Nest said “It’s about the home taking care of itself and taking care of you. You don’t have to program your home. It should know what to do.”

Nest Labs on Wednesday also unleashed a new version of its smoke detector, the Nest Protect that can detect both slow and fast burning fires. The new Nest Protect is having the ability to silence the alarm from a smartphone app via Bluetooth.
