Hacking a Chromebook can get you $100k

Google is one of the biggest names in the internet technology. Since 2010, the search engine giant has been happily rewarding researchers discovering and reporting security issues to them through Google’s Security Reward Program. Last year, Google has paid nearly $2 million in rewards to researchers who have made Google users safe.

In 2015, the company also introduced a $50,000 reward for finding security bugs in Chromebook, but it failed to attract hackers. Now, Google has doubled the top reward for hacking a Chromebook to $100k. The search giant hopes that increasing the reward would lure more hackers and rese

archers to find exploits in the Chromebook.

Google wrote in a blog post regarding the Chrome Reward Program for hacking a Chromebook:

“Since we introduced the $50,000 reward, we haven’t had a successful submission. That said, great research deserves great awards, so we’re putting up a standing six-figure sum, available all year round with no quotas and no maximum reward pool.”

The Mountain View Company has also added a Download Protection Bypass bounty. By doing this, the company is extending its reward program scope to give rewards for methods bypassing Chrome’s Safe Browsing download protection features. What’s the catch here?

If you’re willing to find vulnerabilities in Chromebook, you must do that in the guest mode. The guest mode of Chromebook is well-known for its incredible defense mechanism and increased security. The search giant has defined the exploit it has been looking for as “The compromise, delivered through a Web page, must persist in guest mode even when the Chromebook is rebooted.”

Why Google is doing this?

The search engine giant is doing all this because the Chrome OS hasn’t found as much success as Windows or Mac OS. However, Chromebook has found a niche in schools due to low cost (for as little as $150).

By doubling the reward to $100k for finding the exploits in Chromebook, Google hopes to attract hackers. In this way, the Chrome team will be able to resolve the critical security issues, rather than letting evil forces get access to the vulnerabilities.

Can you hack the Chromebook? If yes, then just give it a try and get a hefty reward.
