A victory by Sanders in Iowa would give him momentum headed into the February 9 New Hampshire primary. Some candidates didn’t plan to wait. Three percent said they’d back former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley. He won the presidency.

Since early January, Iowa’s voter registration rolls have increased by more than 6,700, with 3,651 new Republicans and 2,724 new Democrats, according to the Secretary of State’s office. If not, their backers can either choose not to participate or can join another viable candidate’s group. The ultimate prize is delegates to the parties’ national conventions.
